This happens while playing Deep Rybka 4 64 with fritz 12 interface. No blue screens, it just reboots without any warning.

My specs:

OS: Windows 7 64
CPU: AMD Phenom 2 X4 955
RAM: 8.0 GB dual channel ddr3 634MHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte Ga-790XTA-UD4
Graphics: Asus ATI Radeon 5850

Windows and graphics card are both updated.

I seem to remember seeing this somewhere else. IIRC, the solution was to do an online upgrade of the chess software.

It could also be a hardware issue...Better isolate the problem carefully. If it's not hardware, sometimes, configuration/software changes in the system can cause such conflicts.

Is there any update on Rybka 4? I checked the official forum but found nothing.

I also checked the average cpu temperature while playing. It reaches 70o C. Could this cause the reboot?

Click the green button in the upper lefthand corner of the screen, go to "Activation", and click "Update program". That'll update the interface (which, IIRC that other post, may be the issue).

Or manually download the patch from
www.fritzhelp.com/updates/gui12.exe

A few weeks ago I have had the same problem. Cpu okay, harddiscs okay. Still every time after a few hours a reboot. The computer specialist has replaced my power supply and the cooling of it and since then no problem anymore. May be you know someone who could check your power supply. Good luck

I had this problem, and I fixed it by getting a cooling fan, every body with a modern multicore laptop shuld have a heavy duty fan that the laptop sits on and runs off the usb port, the comuter will run 90 to a 100 degrees cooler. It's not so much a reboot as it is a power off by the microproseser, due to over heating.

Ah, the joys of overclocking.

Indeed that was the problem! I changed to default and now it works fine.

I still don't know why the reboots happened only with the rybka. I mean I used other chess engines which stressed the pc with 100% cpu usage but never got a reboot in these occasions.

Anyway thanks Mr. Lopez and everyone else.

Well, if I was one of those ubiquitous Rybka fanboys on all the computer chess message boards I'd say, "It's because Rybka is so much smarter than all those other chess engines -- it knows overclocking is bad for your processor and acts accordingly".

But I'm not. So I won't.

I had this problem for a while, and I finally took one stick of memory out at a time, and found it was a bad stick of memory. It sounded like a hardware problem, glad you found it.

Chess programs, like video and photo editiing are some of the most intensive uses for PCs and memory, so if you've got a hardware problem, it's likely going to manifest when you're loading it down with a game, or a tournament.
