Post subject: How to get an answer if you have a question
PostPosted: Mon Sep 17, 2007 6:49 pm
You have a question. Right. You want an answer. That's logical. Will you get your answer? A lot of questions will be about problems with software. Keep in mind a few simple rules.

First of all, read the message "I have a question, does the Chess Exchange have the answer?" about how to use the Search Engine on this site. This, by the way, works for all questions, not only software related questions.

Second of all, remember that forum members help forum members. The Chess Exchange has no professional staff. It is being maintained by volunteers.

Chances are that you'll have an answer to your question in less than a few hours. But it could well be every now and then you'll never get an answer to your question. But always remember that your question _is_ being read and that people _do_ think about it. If someone is around who knows the answer - you'll get it. Keep that in mind when you're getting a bit angry if you don't get an answer.

Third of all: every good answer belongs to a good question. With that we mean: be as precise as possible! "Fritz doesn't work anymore!" is _not_ a good example of a good question.
Be as precise as possible if you encounter a problem. What exactly did you do? What does exactly happen? If you haven't got a clue, also tell us something about your computer - OS, memory, graphical card - the usual stuff.

Fourth of all: We're no Windows or Mac experts. We don't do common OS-related questions, simply because we're not qualified enough. Some very informed people _might_ hang around, but our business here is chess.

Fifth of all: when in doubt, ask your question. We're here to help. And maybe next time you might be able to help others.
