I am looking for software that will let me create a board that does not need a King to be placed on it. I like to make puzzles that I can print for students or on my blog. Kings can really distract kids or take away from the dynamics of a position.

I waited to reply because I wanted to see what everyone/anyone else would say.

I know of no chess software which allows position entry/printing without Kings on the board. The only suggestion I have is for you to export the position to a graphics file and then edit out the Kings before printing the image.

I'm afraid I don't know either. There a few programs here, but I don't know if they do what you want.

CowboyNoel:

You can use ChessBase’s Fritz 10/11/12 or Rybka 3 or 4 in the "Giveaway chess" mode.

1) Start/create a new game in the "Giveaway chess" mode:
a. Menu: File - New - Giveaway chess.

2) Press “s” and select "Giveaway chess" or go to Menu: File: New - Position setup and simply create the position you want without the King or Kings.

3) Click OK.

You now have a position without a King(s).

Since the King(s) plays no special role in “Giveaway chess” you don’t need to use them.

The “Giveaway chess” mode is also useful for placing pawns on the first and eight ranks.

Enjoy your diagrams with Kings!
