:? Ok so I'm relatively new to chess, but I always wanted to ask this question and I've read through a lot of post and you seemed to be a well informed bunch..... :D Well here goes: What if you memorize a chess opening line and your opponent, either because of lack of knowledge of the opening line or lines, or because he doesn't like that opening plays differently do you continue play of the opening the best you can or do you have to memorize a lot of opening lines and hope they come up??

A chess opening is a choice for a strategy, not a memorized line. Understanding the strategy means understanding the opening line, including transpositions. This goes for both players.

When choosing an opening line or opening repertoire, always take care that you know what you choose and why you chose it, and you won't get into problems when your opponent takes a different exit.

By choosing a type of opening it will also guarantee that deviations from the opening you chose will also lead you into other, but equally familiar territory when it comes to strategy and/or tactics.

Memorizing a bunch of moves is not a good idea.

Your goal should be to understand why each and every move that you are supposed to make in your opening is considered the best move.
And, just as importantly, understand why each of your opponent's moves is considered the best.

In theory, whenever your opponent makes a move that is not "book", he is making an error.
And if you understand why he was supposed to make the move in the book, then you will understand how to take advantage of the move that he made instead.

I must respectfully disagree. As long as your opponent's move doesn't drop material for no reason and as long as his move doesn't create a significant positonal weakness, then his move is probably playable. The move may not be what a GM would consider "best", but that doesn't mean that it is an error. The so-called "book" changes all the time, and is a matter of fashion and opinion as much as it is an objective evaluation.

Memorizing opening lines isn't as bad as it sounds. For many, this is the first step. Although it takes a long time, when you memorize the opening lines, there is absolutely no one who can claim an advantage against you before the 3rd or 4th move. Here is a short-list to help you get started:

That's the longest 'short' list I've ever seen.

As Sir William illustrates, memorising lines is not the way to go! I consider the openings I am likey to face on the way to my favorite and seek out some niches, which I will get to play often and know well. This article has some more advice...

Comprehension is much better than learning by rote!

At lower levels, memorising is absolutely not necessary anyway.

One of the best chess compliments I ever received was when I'd only just started playing chess. After about 8 moves, my opponent said "Hardly a radical start this. What a boring, standard opening we're both playing!". I had absolutely no idea I was playing a standard opening. I was just trying to get my pieces onto active squares, and make sure my opponent couldn't have all the fun in the centre of the board because I knew my long range pieces (bishops and rooks) should retain freedom to attack from a distance and move around.

The point is, if you understand the aims of a particular opening, and you try to find moves that meet those aims, there is a strong chance you'll play standard openings without even noticing. Sometimes your opponent will outwit you, and you'll end up with a weaker position. Next time you play that opening, you will think of some ruse to stop your opponent from making his strong move. In this way you'll actually explore that opening and ultimately know it much better than if you learn sequences of moves from a book.

I agree with you, Lionel.
And if you are playing similar openings during some time you will learn the good and the bad lines the hard (and probably the only) way.

Whenever i play a game of chess it seems if i dont start out with queens pawn or moving a castle then i usualy end up in a postion that i leaves me at a disadvantage, i have tried other moves to start but nothing seems to work for me, maybe its jsut my style of play.

I've found that practicing openings with a chess computer or software is very helpful. You can try new ones and make your blunders before playing a real person! You can also see if you are comfortable with these
openings. Eventually you may get tired and want to try new openings.Having a good reference on your options is also good.

I know you all really like that long list of openings, but I sure would like to see it in a smaller font :) And if possible no spacing :) Have a nice day!

Studying variation after variation and memorizing the same will improve nothing save your ability to remember useless trivia. It is only memorization and when the opponent deviates from the preconceived notion of how the game "should" have went, then the memory is useless. One must understand tactics and positional considerations in order to be prepared for any opening, any move, any time.

However, once a certain level is obtained it is necessary to deeply understand the objectives of your opening of choice but even then analyzing till the 40th move is ridiculous.

I have been playing in tournaments for about nine years now.

I know some opening lines since I have played in chess tournaments for a long time.
I don't think it isn't a good idea to memorize.

When I play, I always rely on winning tips, like
control the center, develop your knights and bishops, etc.
