Post subject: Chess Opening and variation names
PostPosted: Sun Dec 25, 2005 2:15 am
Dear chess friends,

I am promoting a complete change of all opening and variation names. I am of the opinion that all need a permanent change towards the better.

Queen's gambit? Where is the Queen sacrifice?
King's gambit? Same question....
Orang Utan variation? Come on, chess is an art, a science and a sport, not a zoo.

What is your opinion?

Thanks, IM Jovan Petronic.

Almost exactly my thoughts!

So i propose offering each opening name, variation name and even each move played in chess at an auction, where the money received would go for youth development in chess! The move owners would have limited ownership, and their name would have to be mentioned in every game publication where the move was played. An advertisment dream come true.

The Madonna variation, Elton John attack, Toshiba Defence, Coca-Cola opening, etc.

Any opinion now? IM J.P.

P.S. I estimate donations/sponsorship to up to one billion US dollars.

Yes I have two opinions.
1- You are joking
2- If not you are crazy.

Either way thanks for the laughs!

1st of all, all chess players are "crazy", that's not it then.

2nd, yes, I was joking a month ago, when I got the first idea, but now not any more. I even already have 1 person who is willing to sponsor 1.Nc3, without even asking for any advertisement in return!

Thanks, IM J.P.

Post subject: Coca Cola chess sponsor

Grandmaster Yasser Seirawan in a relatively recent interview at http://www.gmsquare.com/interviews/seirawan.html, said:
"I don't see Coca-Cola or even Cesar's Palace sponsoring the championship."

Many had thought attracting Coke to chess was an impossible task.

Coca-Cola is now sponsoring the San Diego US Championship (and has "Rook sponsor" status)!! Way to go, San Diego!

The next step may be chess moves sponsorship, from which Coca-Cola may get much more profit and advertisement!? Of course, "if the price is right" (which was one of my favorite TV shows in the 70s)!

 Post subject: Chess Opening Changes
PostPosted: Tue Mar 07, 2006 11:08 pm
I wouldn't bother due to the fact that will decrease sales of important chess opening books. Sadly, there are some really strange openings/defenses out there: The Hippopatumus Defense; the Cornstalk Defense...how creative?!

However, the two listed abouve could be changed simply because they are not widely played among the higher levels... :D
