 Post subject: Interesting Chess Question
PostPosted: Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:31 am
Suppose a white bishop takes the undeveloped black’s King’s knight on its original square: could the black King castle and take the bishop in the same move (assuming no other laws of castling would be broken)?

For example, observe this simple game opening:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxg8

Could black now just castle, in the process, his King taking the white bishop on g8?

My guess - not legal

The rules say the squares between King & Rook must be "vacant".

What do you think?

Interesting question! I was sure it wasn't legal and the exact wording of the official rules backs that up.

(2) Castling is prevented temporarily:

1. if the square on which the king stands, or the square which it must cross, or the square which it is to occupy, is attacked by one or more of the opponent's pieces, or
2. if there is any piece between the king and the rook with which castling is to be effected.
