All these chess sites are loaded with noobz cheating with programs.
Playchess.com also makes no exeption although his highly regarded anti-software routine, which cannot recognize if u use engine help for just a couple of moves.
Other people take chess server for chat servers.
Online play sucks big time, hopefully we'll slowly returning to the good old club.
Best regards.

We'd like to promote our own website chesshotel.com. The site is free and has
a great interface for live chess and live chess960. The site usually has between
200-400 players online at the same time. It's really easy to get a game quickly
and if you register at the site you get to keep your rating.

Good luck with your games!

When it comes to best sites to play chess on-line I would suggest http://www.kurnik.org/ - The site supports 18 languages, it has a user-friendly layout. The ranks are really close to real ones - Players with let's say 1800 ELO have there 1700-1900. There are many players with ELO over 2100, also Masters and IM. What's more, when you don't want to play chess you can pick one of 20 other games available.

I play there often, and I like joining the online tournaments people make. My rating over there is 1632.

I'd definitely recommend http://www.ChessCube.com.

There's a ton of stuff you can do:
Play free chess online - Find a partner instantly. Chess styles include 960chess, 10 seconds plus one up to 60 minute games.
Play live tournaments - with great prizes, 24/7 schedule, sit-and-go and Warzone
A social community - chat with people from around the world and make new friends
Learn with videos - learn from the masters and improve your game
Get your own chess application for your website - by signing up for the free b2b program, you and your friends can play on your website as well as have your own private chat room.
You can also access ChessCube from Facebook - save time on signing up via email and play from Facebook.

Two sites I'd have to suggest are http://www.zone.com or http://www.instantchess.com.

Instantchess.com is free for the first 64 games, but really good. Zone.com is free and is a fun place to play.

For news, my favorite is Chessbase.com
To play for free, chess.com

I totally agree. Playing over the board, where you tangibly pick up a piece and move it to a square, rather than monkey around with a mouse on a 2D screen and have to deal with delays and computer gliches.
