Another excellent, and well used site, is ChessWorld.net.

Either of these sites will get you there:

www.letsplaychess.com

www.chessworld.net

If you wish to play online correspondence chess, try out the Red Hot Pawn.com (http://www.redhotpawn.com).

For blitz chess, see: www.uchess.com

Two sites I'd have to suggest are http://www.zone.com or http://www.instantchess.com.

Instantchess.com is free for the first 64 games, but really good. Zone.com is free and is a fun place to play.

I play chess on http://www.itsyourturn.com

After checking out the links provided, here are my favorites:

1. http://www.queenalice.com/
2. http://www.chesshere.com/
3. http://www.chess-mail.com/

All three are totally free, have a pleasing interface and allow previewing a move before submitting.

After examining these three sites, I think queenalice is worth a try. The other two seem to lack some basic features that I expect from turn based sites. Queenalice offers clear explanation of the rules, pgn download, a selection of reasonable time controls, tournaments, multi-language support, and a privacy policy.

Chesshere just upgraded their interface. Really nice.

I agree with you on queenalice. They also have all the openings with variation database.

I'm now playing at Chesshere, and must comment Khaled, the webmaster, for his responsiveness to user suggestions. The site still lacks many features that are available at my favorite correspondence site, but it is in rapid development.

I'm also playing at Queen Alice, which has some nice features.

However, neither of these sites are yet as good as ChessWorld, the best overall site for serious correspondence paced online chess, nor quite as much fun as Red Hot Pawn with its vigorous forums and clan play.

Really? Things must have changed then over the last year.

When I played there more frequently, there was a total of maybe 10 titled players - others where in the best list, but I never saw them when I was online ... and my online ratio was quite high.

I would recommend the Internet Chess Club at any times ... ok, since I am International Master I get free access, but still: If you want to get serious chess, this is the place to go :)
