When it comes to best sites to play chess on-line I would suggest http://www.kurnik.org/ - The site supports 18 languages, it has a user-friendly layout. The ranks are really close to real ones - Players with let's say 1800 ELO have there 1700-1900. There are many players with ELO over 2100, also Masters and IM. What's more, when you don't want to play chess you can pick one of 20 other games available.

Really? Things must have changed then over the last year.

When I played there more frequently, there was a total of maybe 10 titled players - others where in the best list, but I never saw them when I was online ... and my online ratio was quite high.

I would recommend the Internet Chess Club at any times ... ok, since I am International Master I get free access, but still: If you want to get serious chess, this is the place to go :)

International Master? How good are you then?

Hi guys!
What can u say about http://www.chessassistantclub.com ?
I heard its the official chess playing site of the Russian Chess Federation. One thing i love about this site is that u dont have to wait for several minutes to seek an opponent. Theres always a Russian at your caliber ready to play! Most importantly, it's completely free!! :D

Check this site out http://www.chessclan.com
No download is reguired and it is absolutely free. It reminds me correspondent chess. You can set up timeout for making a move (could be days or weeks). You can have as many games as you want simultaneously. All moves could be made in your browser.

http://www.ChessForDollars.com is my favorite. They are free and there are no limits. They've just added speed chess and will have speed tournaments in addition to their correspondence tournaments in a few days.

What I really like is they are gearing up to play huge tournaments with money prizes.
