Post subject: Pawn exchange for queen
PostPosted: Wed May 25, 2011 6:18 am
Hello,
I just played a game whereby my pawn made it to my opponents last square (8th position). I requested that the pawn be exchanged for a queen. My opponent objected stating that my queen was in play and had not been taken yet. My understanding was that I can request any piece.
What are tournament rules regarding this move.
Thank you

Hi ikestr, welcome to the forum :)

You are quite correct. When one of your pawns reaches the 8th rank you can promote it to any piece you like (except a King). So if you want to make it a queen, it doesn't matter if you still have your original queen on the board.

So, in theory you could have up to 9 queens although that's very unlikely!

Some expensive chess sets come with an extra queen of each colour for this eventuality. Otherwise, if there is no spare queen available, then sometimes an upside-down rook is used instead!

The official rules are here. The relevant part for your question is 3.7e. :)
