Hi all,

I am working on an opening repertoire I can use for many years - one that I can play for many games and become more familiar with it than my opponents. I plan on buying the opening books on my chosen opening and have two choices. I'm just not sure which opening book is better or if they are both equal and may come down to personal preference.

1. The English Opening - Mihail Marin three volume set - Quality Chess
2. The Catalan - Boris Avrukh two volume set - Quality Chess

These were written some time ago. For anyone familiar with these two series I have a few questions?

Does either one have any holes or analysis that has been found to be not satisfactory?

Would one be more suited for a life time repertoire than the other?

Any other thoughts on these two repertoires?

I used to play the Catalan. A very solid opening. I liked that you often have a queenside pawn majority going into the endgame. It is incremental, with a gradual accumalation of advantages. But then, it can also get a bit wild with the Open Catalan. What is interesting is that Kasparov was playing it toward the end of his career, where as before he always opted for an open game, with his white bishop active out on the board and not constrained to the long diagonal.
