Post subject: Blitz Openings for White
PostPosted: Thu Feb 28, 2008 12:10 am
After a long and serious illness I have started to play chess again. As I cannot go to my chess club any longer, I now play chess in the Internet and I had to recycle my opening repertoire for blitz chess. In blitz I like to play the openings like a robot to save time for the middle and endgame. So I studied openings that can be played easily far into the middle game. I can recommend two openings for White that gave me very good results and a lot of fun: The Halloween and the Smith-Morra Gambit. The Halloween is a surprise to most opponents and as you can play the first seven moves in a few seconds, you gain a lot of time on your clock. I would not necessarily recommend to play the Halloween in longer games although it has been played even in correspondence games. But in blitz the pressure on your opponent is very strong and he usually blunders or uses too much time.

Here are two typical games I played recently on the Chessbase server:
(playing level: 5 minutes without increment)

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 [2. - Nf3 3. Nc3 avoiding the Petrow] 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nxe5 !? Nxe5 5. d4 [here black must make a decision: should he play Nc6 or Ng6? That costs time.] 5. - Ng6 6. e5 [this is one of the key moves in the Halloween] 6. - Ng8 7. Bc4 [all these moves can be played in a few seconds by an experienced Halloween player] 7. - d5!? [my opponent obviously knew that it is good policy to give back material for the sake of development] 8. Bxd5 c6 9. Bb3 Bb4 10. 0-0 Bxc3 11. bxc3 N8e7 12. f4 0-0 13. Ba3 Re8 14. Qf3 Nf5 15. g4 Nfh4 16. Qg3 h5 17. f5 Nxf5 [gaining back your material with interests. If 17. Nh8 f6] 18. gxf5 h4 19. Bxf7 Kxf7 20. Qxg6 Kg8 21. f6 Re8 [desperation] 22. Qxg7 #

Here is another one:

[the first 7 moves are identical, that's what makes it so easy for the White player]

7. Bc4 Bc3 8. Qf3 [a key move] Bxc3 9. bxc3! [not Qxc3, because the bishop my go to a3]
9. - Qe7 10. 0-0 Nh6 11. g3 d6 12. exd6 Qxd6 13. Re1+ Be6 14. Bxh6 gxh6 15. d5 Ne5 16. Qf6 and Black resigned.

I hope these two little games will wetten your appetite for playing the Halloween. I can assure you the fun factor is very high. If you are seriously interested in playing the Halloween you should consult

Another opening I can heartily recommend for blitz is the Smith-Morra Gambit. against the Sicilian.

The opening moves are very easy to play because you have a tabiya:

The white knights are on c3 and f3, the white-square bishop is on c4, the Queen is on e2, the rooks on c1 and d1. Very easy to play. Objectively you do not have an opening advantage, just enough compensation, but the pressure on your opponent's position is very high and most players blunder or lose by time. I have won the vast majority of my games with the Smith-Morra and when I lost it was often due to a horrible blunder in a won position.

Here are are two typical games I playe (level 5 + 0):

1. e4 c5 2. d4 cxd4 3. c3 dxc3 4. Nxc3 [here Black must make a decision and that costs time] 4. - e6 [this move was played a lot in my internet games] 5. Nf3 a6 6. Bf4 [this is the only decision white must make in the early stage of the game: where to put the black-square bishop. It may go to e3, f4 or g5] 6. - Ne7 7. Bc4 Ng6 8. Bg3 Be7 9. 0-0 0-0 10. Rc1 Nc6 11. Qd2 [Qe2 can also be played] 11. - b5 12. Be2 [12. Bb3 Na5] 12. - Bb7 13. Rfd1 Bc8 [there will be a lot of retreats in this game]
14. a3 Qb6 15. h4 Na5 16. Rc2 Sc4 17. Bxc4 bxc4 18. h5 [there is still enough pressure on the white position] 18. - Nh8 19. Ne5 [the white pieces dominate the board] 19. - Ra7 20. Nxc4 Qb7 21. Bd6 Bxd6 22. Nxd6 Qb6 23. Nd5! Qb8 [23. exd5 24. Nxc8] 24. Ne7 #

That was fun, wasn't it?

The first 4 white moves are identical in the following game:

4. Nxc3 Nc6 [one of the most common replies] 5. Nf3 g6 6. Bc4 e6 7. 0-0 Nge7 8. Bf4 Bg7 9. Nb5 [a very common motive if black misses a6] 9. - e5 [this does not prevent the following move] 10. Nd6+ Kf8 11. Nxf7 Qc7 12. Bg3 Rg8 13. N3g5 d5 14. exd5 Na5 15. d6 Qxc4 16. dxe7 Kxe7 17. Qd6+ Ke8 18. Qd8 # I enjoyed that, too.

If you are interested in playing the Smith-Morra, you should get the excellent book "The Modern Morra Gambit, A Dynamic Weapon against the Sicilian" by Hannes Langrock and get some games from a good database.

I will also make a post of what to play as Black in blitz.

Enjoy the game! :D
