Post subject: Question about the 7.Qg4 French Winnower
PostPosted: Tue Apr 02, 2013 12:59 pm
Hi All

I recently had a bit of a shock in one of my games from the Black side of the French Defence.

After the usual mainline:

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc4 Bb4 4.e5 Ne7 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3 c5 7.Qg4 Qc7 (the only move for black to get anything from the opening) 8.Qxg7 Rg8 9.Qxh7 cxd4 (if 10.cxd4 Qc3+) 10.Ne7 dxc3 11.f4 Nbc6 my opponent surprised me with the simple 12.Nxc3?! (the only move I’ve had to face here is 12.Qd3 then I can carry on with Simon Williams’ recommendation of 12…d4!)

12.Nxc3 isn’t considered in any of my books or DVD’s but I have been wracking my brains and can’t find a thing wrong with it (I’m not a Fritz user)

At first I thought it was an abject blunder and almost instantly played 12…Nxe5 but this seems to loose to 13. Nb5! Qa5+ 14.Bd2

However try as I might I can’t see anything better - I played 12…Bd7 in the game, and went on to draw, but only because of inaccurate endgame play by my opponent - obviously after Bd7 Nb5 is still a problem :? Any ideas?
