As a class B player ive had some trouble playing against the pirc defense. 1 e4 d6 2 d4 NF6 3 Nc3 g6. Its very solid for black and i was wondering if anybody had some weapons against this opening. Thanks much appreciated.

Hi Tactician,
The set-up I use against the Pirc or the Modern is e4 / d4 / Nc3 / Be3. This is followed by Qd2 and f3 / o-o-o or Nf3 / o-o. I've found the set-up easy to play, most often leading to a strong kingside attack for White. If Ng4 then Bg5 and if b5 when you've not chosen f3, then ensure Bd3 is played to protect e4 and allow Nce2 in reply to b4. In the f3 lines, the follow-up is normally g4, h4, Nge2, Ng3, h5, In the Nf3 lines, then Bh6, h4. Hope this gives some food for thought. It's sometimes referred to as the 150 attack over here.

Some aggressive ideas against the Pirc Defense (1 e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 g6):

Austrian Attack: 4 f4

Byrne Variation: 4 Bg5 O-O 5 f4

Visit your local copy of MCO-14 or NCO for details.

I have played the Pirc Defense as black for a few years now, and 4. Be3 is one of the serious enemies, but, personally, I love the black positions that arise after this move. Most white players overestimate the strength of the kingside attack and I get a great game. Same goes for 4. f4, but I can't say the same for 4. Bg5. This line gives me the most trouble and is what I play with white when I face the Pirc. The reason is that most players are not familiar with the following simple line:

1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. Bg5 Bg7 5. e5 dxe5 6. dxe5 and unfamiliar players will play the awful 6...Qxd1+ 7. Rxd1, and white's position is winning. A frequent continuation is 7...Ng4 8. h3! Nxe5 9. Nd5 winning for white.

The correct move 6...Ng4 is almost impossible to find over the board if your opponent is not familiar with the theory. 7. Qxd8+ Kxd8 8. Rd1 Bd7 9. e6 (9. Nd5!? is probably a better gamble b/c a defense is again very difficult to find over the board if your opponent is unfamiliar with the following theory: 9...Nc6 10. f4 h6 11. Bg5 g5) fxe6 10. Bc4 Ke8 11. Nf3 Nc6 12. 0-0 Nce5 13. Nxe5 Nxe5 14. Nb5 Bxb5! (14...Kd8 15. Rxd7 Nxd7 16. Bxe6 Be5 17. f4 Bd6 18. Bh6) 15. Bxb5+ c6. Even here with this super precise play by black, white has the two bishops, a lead in development, and a better pawn structure for the pawn.

So mostly this line is a good weapon for white b/c the saving lines for black are very difficult to find so they must be versed in theory. Also, most black players will find these moves psychologically difficult to play.

Cheers,

G

Hi there,

I have only recently read the last post in this thread, which I thought was very interesting. 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. Bg5 Bg7 5.e5 dxe5.
However what would be whites response if black played 5---Nd7.
Anyone got any suggestions.
